Getting to Mount Takao
Mount Takao, or Takaosan, is a stunning nature retreat located about an hour from Tokyo. It’s a perfect destination for a day trip if you’re looking to escape the city and enjoy fresh air, lush greenery, and panoramic views. It is as beautiful as Karuizawa.

I started my journey from Shinjuku Station, taking the Keio Line to Takaosanguchi Station. The train ride was smooth and scenic, with glimpses of the countryside as we left Tokyo’s urban sprawl behind. With its convenient location and efficient transportation, getting to Mount Takao is easy and stress-free.
Exploring Takaosanguchi Station
Upon arriving at Takaosanguchi Station, I was greeted by a beautiful and modern station building, designed to harmonize with the surrounding natural environment. Inside, there were shops selling souvenirs, local snacks, and even hiking gear.

Before heading to the mountain, I stopped at the visitor center to grab a map and some tips about the trails and attractions. This station itself sets the tone for the relaxing adventure ahead.
Stop 1: The Lift Chair Experience
A Unique Way Up

One of the highlights of Mount Takao is the lift chair, which takes you partway up the mountain. This open-air ride offers stunning views of the forest and the surrounding hills.
The gentle ascent felt like floating above a sea of green (or vibrant reds and oranges in autumn). The crisp breeze and the sound of birdsong made the ride even more enjoyable. It’s a relaxing and scenic alternative to hiking the lower section of the mountain.

The lift chair dropped me off near the midway point, where I began my trek to the summit.
Stop 2: Yakuoin Temple
A Spiritual Pause
Midway up Mount Takao is the historic Yakuoin Temple, a Buddhist temple dating back to the 8th century. The temple is dedicated to Tengu, mythical bird-like creatures believed to be mountain guardians.

The temple complex is serene and beautifully nestled among tall trees. I took some time to explore the main hall, admire the intricate carvings, and even ring the temple bell for good fortune.
Yakuoin also offers vegetarian temple cuisine, but since I was short on time, I skipped the meal and continued my journey upwards.
Stop 3: The Summit of Mount Takao
Reaching New Heights
After a leisurely walk along a well-maintained path, I reached the summit of Mount Takao, which stands at 599 meters above sea level. The summit offers breathtaking views of Mount Fuji (on clear days), Tokyo’s skyline, and the surrounding valleys.

The observation deck is a great spot to rest and soak in the scenery. Many visitors bring packed lunches, but there are also small vendors selling snacks and drinks. The panoramic views made the climb worth every step.
Lunch: Soba Noodles and Local Delights
A Taste of Takao
For lunch, I headed back down to a restaurant near the lift station that’s famous for its soba noodles, made with locally sourced ingredients. I ordered a bowl of tororo soba (soba topped with grated yam), a specialty of the region.
The warm, flavorful noodles were the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring. To top it off, I tried dango, grilled rice dumplings coated in sweet soy sauce, which are a popular snack in the area.
Exploring the Nature Trails
More Than Just a Summit

Mount Takao has several trails, each offering unique perspectives of the mountain’s flora and fauna. After lunch, I chose a different trail for my descent.
The path was shaded by towering trees, with occasional glimpses of small waterfalls and wooden bridges. Interpretive signs along the trail highlighted the mountain’s rich biodiversity, making the walk both educational and enjoyable.
For those interested in wildlife, Mount Takao is home to over 1,200 species of plants and various birds and insects.
